Frequently asked questions
Common questions about the Impulse cooktop.
Do I need an electrician?
You do not need an electrician if you are using a 120 V connection. If you plan to install your cooktop on a 240 V hardwired connection, you will need an electrician.
Is there a difference between using a 120 V and 240 V connection?
Regardless of which connection you use, the Impulse Cooktop delivers full performance thanks to its powerful integrated battery. If both options are available, we recommend hardwiring the cooktop to a 240 V connection to unlock future energy features and benefits, such as backfeeding.
What kind of cord does the Impulse Cooktop come with?
The Impulse Cooktop comes with a 5-foot, 120 V cord attached. It also ships with a 3-foot, 240 V hardwired connection that your electrician can install.
What material is the 240 V connector?
The 240 V connector is made of tinned copper.
What size cutout do I need?
Ideal cutout measurements below for the 30” Impulse Cooktop: Width (X): 28 1/2” - 29 1/2”; Depth (Y): 19 5/16” - 19 5/8”. See our Installation Manual for more information.
Can I put an oven underneath the Impulse Cooktop?
Yes. Several wall ovens fit underneath — see the shortlist with cutout dimensions and the install stack breakdown.
What is this fan noise after setup?
Your Impulse Cooktop battery ships about 30% charged. When you first set up your cooktop, it will fully charge the battery. Depending on your connection, this can take a few hours and will likely result in noticeable fan noise from the inverter.
How much does the Impulse Cooktop weigh?
The Impulse Cooktop ships in two boxes, one containing the battery and the other the cooktop. Each box weighs approximately ~75 lbs.
What types of pots and pans should I use?
For best results, we recommend three-ply stainless steel cookware, though any pots and pans that are magnetic will work with the Impulse Cooktop’s induction burners, including cast iron and most non-stick pans.
Can I use a griddle?
Yes. Griddles work on the Impulse Cooktop as long as they are made from a magnetic material. For best results, we recommend three-ply models. You will need to control each burner touching the griddle individually.
Can I use a pan that is smaller than the burner?
Yes. Induction technology will only heat the magnetic area of a pan. So if a pan is smaller than the burner, energy will only be transferred to the portion of the burner covered by the pan. As long as your pan is covering the temperature sensor, the stove should work with any sized pan. Note: If you are using cookware smaller than 9”, our Active Temperature Sensing Technology might limit the amount of energy deployed to the pan to prevent overheating.
Can I use a pan that is larger than the burner?
Yes. As long as the pan is covering the active temperature sensor and is magnetic, you should be able to use it.
How do I clean the burner surface?
Once it’s cool, wipe with a soft sponge and soapy water or a glass cooktop cleaner. Avoid anything abrasive. For the screen, a glass polish made for electronics works great.
How do I clean around the temperature sensor?
Bunch up a rag or towel and wipe gently. The temperature sensor is sealed from the top and bottom, so liquid shouldn’t get through. It is much easier to clean that it looks. We promise.
Why is the burner not reaching 10 KW of power?
The pan may be heating too quickly — our temperature sensor will throttle power to protect your cookware. This can happen with pans under 9" or on disc-bottom / impact-bonded cookware. For best results, use three-ply stainless steel.
What’s that fan noise?
Induction stoves, including the Impulse Cooktop, are air cooled and make use of fans to maintain optimal operating temperatures. The Impulse Cooktop has a few different fans that can run at different times. There is a fan to cool the cooktop itself, which typically runs during during cooking. There is a fan on the inverter, which runs during charging. This is most noticeable following cooking if the battery has dropped below 75%, at which point it automatically starts charging. There is also a fan on integrated into the battery. This can turn on if the air temperature around the battery exceeds 82 degrees F.

Why is there a fan noise after I finish cooking?
After cooking, you may hear the fan continue to run. This is normal: the fans help cool the cooktop while the battery recharges.
How do I force reboot the stove?
If the knobs become unresponsive, press and hold the power button for 10 seconds until you hear a click. The stove will then power off and restart.
My battery isn’t fully charged, why isn’t it charging?
The cooktop charges automatically whenever the battery falls below your Battery Reserve threshold. The default reserve is 70% — adjust it in Settings → Power and Battery → Battery Reserve. If you’ve set up Scheduled Charging, the cooktop will also top up to 100% during your scheduled window any time the battery is below 95%.
How do I fully shut down the cooktop?
To fully power off your Impulse Cooktop, press and hold the power button for 10 seconds. You will hear an audible click when fully powered off.
My Impulse Cooktop is not downloading the latest update during setup.
If you see an error screen saying download unsuccessful, please wait 30 seconds before trying again. During initial setup, it can sometimes take two tries before the device successfully connects to the server and downloads the latest version of the software.
My device is getting stuck at the “Checking for Updates” screen?
If your cooktop during the onboarding OTA update check, it is most likely unable to reach Impulse’s update servers properly. This usually indicates a network failure. The cooktop should resolve to a “failed to download” message after a few minutes. But if that doesn’t happen, you can restart the process by pressing and holding the power button for 10 seconds to power down the system. What the cooktop requires: - Outbound internet access over HTTPS - Ability to resolve DNS for *.memfault.com/*.google.com (for NTP) - Ability to send NTP requests to set the time and allow secured communication over HTTPS Common causes: - The Wi-Fi network has no working internet connection - DNS filtering, firewall rules, or security gateways are blocking traffic - Captive portals (e.g., hotel or enterprise Wi-Fi requiring a web login) prevent the cooktop from completing onboarding Recommended steps: 1. Confirm another device on the same network can reach the internet. 2. Ensure your firewall doesn't block the communication to those services. 3. If you get a “Failed to Download” message after initial Wi-Fi setup, please wait 30 seconds before a retry to allow the time to be properly set to your device for secured communication.
